Re: ENGINE SPEED AND STRONG

Hi Catherine, The last version is on dropbox: [...] It is now possible to play a game via the console but I didn't implement pondering yet, this has to wait for the next version. I was never my intention to play games via the console so it is more or less hacked in and not very well tested. My plan...

Re: ENGINE SPEED AND STRONG

Michel observed that while the number of draws greatly depends on time control, the win/loss ratio remains mostly invariant. If that's true (enough), I nominate "Wilo" as a progress measure that we can exchange. It's a pun on Elo and win/loss that was mentioned in chess; Wilo is simply the Elo form...

Re: ENGINE SPEED AND STRONG

Hi Gérard, That is a difficult question, there are many different definitions of what can be the strongest move. For instance the move that wins the game in the shortest number of moves, or the move that gives you the highest win rate, or te move that gives you the highest chance to win. Playing wh...

Re: ENGINE SPEED AND STRONG

... I have the feeling that the 6x6 pattern evaluation of Dragon might be better than the 4x4 pattern evaluation used by Scan, somehow Dragon seems to be 5.5 times slower (at least this is what I read somewhere), this will make a difference in search-depth of ~3 plies which in turn has a considerab...

Re: Announcement of 2 computerdraughts tournaments

Michel, welcome, any major/minor changes/improvements with respect to Dragon worth mentioning. Bert I haven't had much time to spend on dragon. Mostly there are some minor improvements. There is one major algorithmic improvement in development, but that won't be fully ready for the next tournament....

Re: ENGINE SPEED AND STRONG

Yes... that is a possibility, in that case I have to modify DXP a little to have it accept msec. or usec. timings (maybe your modification already does this?). Lets say that I want to run at least 1 complete game each second, in that case a move will take ~8 msec. for each side, this is still doabl...

Re: Announcement of 2 computerdraughts tournaments

For me, 1 tournament is enough this year. Dragon will join for one of the 2 tournaments, but i haven't decided yet which one.

Re: Dragon draughts, endgame tables, memory allocation problem

But the program does not release memory when necessary, when calculating endgame tablebases, at least not with my configuration. I have 16 G memory on Windows 10. And the problem is already there when I try seven men. That should work with 4 G memory, as stated in the manual. The longer the process...

Re: DeepMind

That's one major breakthrough! I wasn't expecting that so soon already. At some point there will be deep learning modules that you can simply add to your game source code, just as easy it is now to include for example a linear algebra dll. In a couple of years deep learning will be everywhere. Michel

Re: Scan's 4x4 pattern concept and non losing game

asked the same question for the same reason. We don't have the answer yet (only Michel can answer, and it's not easy), but here are a few possibilities, none of which seems particularly likely: I have been investigating for a while now, and i still don't have the answer to that. I am investigating ...

Re: dragon 4.5

Hi Michel, Thank again for this new version of Dragon. It seem that a new challenger came. I am very glad to see that Ed, Bert, Letouzy, Harm, Rein and you are working to improve the level of draughts by programing softwares strongest than ever. In this way, i downloaded this morning Dragon 4.5, in...

Re: Tournament of programs in international draughts

In my opinion playing 75 moves in 20 minutes is OK. Actually I would even recommend 30 minutes per game and two games (1x white, 1x black). In my opinion more time means emphasis on positional play, less time means emphasis on speed. Regarding Truus, I believe that his program was designed for posi...

Re: Tournament of programs in international draughts

Interesting top four! Apparently Truus is still one of the best. Actually, i think it is a bit depressing that the modern programs still can't reliably win from a 30 year old one that has no multithreading, no bitboards and no machine learning. I think that soon I will do a new tournament among pro...
