Draughts Team From Ukraine Sets World Record

Kyiv, April 9, 2013.
Ukrainian women draughts team has set a world record at the Second European Women Team Championship 2013 in Tallinn, Estonia. For the first time a national team (Olha Baltazhy and Viktoria Bielaya) has won in all three draughts events - classic, rapid, and blitz draughts at a European championship. Such result has never before been registered at both European and world championships, informed the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Ukrainian men also won medals in all three types of draughts at the European Championship in Tallinn (April 3-7). Yuriy Anikieyev, Artem Ivanov, and Ihor Kirzner brought home silver in rapid draughts, and two bronze medals in classic and blitz draughts. Teams from Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and Ukraine participated in the international draughts competition.
Olha Baltazhy is a six-time draughts champion of Ukraine. Additionally, she became the runner-up in the national competitions eight times. In December 2012, Olha Baltazhy won the SportAccord World Mind Games in Beijing. The multisport competition featured a draughts tournament, in which Ukrainian Baltazhy placed third in draughts blitz.
Olha’s team partner Viktoria Bielaya became the champion of Ukraine once - in 2012. In March 2013, Olha Baltazhy won the fourth place in the Sixth European Blitz Championship in Budapest Women, Viktoria Bielaya - fifth. Ukrainian Daryna Tkachenko won the title of the European Champion in draughts in the same competition. Another Ukrainian draughts player Maria Motrichko became the runner-up in Budapest. In the final round the European championship featured seven female draughts players.
As of April 1, 2013, Ukrainian Daryna Tkachenko was second in the global rating by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD) after Latvian player Zoja Golubeva. Another Ukrainian Viktoria Motrichko currently takes the ninth position in FMJD rating. The third Ukrainian in the top list of FMJD is Artem Ivanov, who is the eighth among men.
