AARON RECUENCO
The victim of the reported recent attack on journalist in Digos City on Saturday is not a media practitioner, a local police commander clarified Monday.
While Nestor Bedolido indeed wrote some articles in the past, Senior Superintendent Ronald dela Rosa, director of the Davao del Sur Police, explained that it was already three years ago and his stories were published on a local government news letter.
“At the time of his death, said victim was not a practicing journalist." said dela Rosa.
The official said Bedolido appeared to be more of a businessman than a journalist, being the reported owner of Torecz Videoke Bar.
Earlier reports stated that Bedolido was a reporter for weekly Kastigador based in Digos City.
Bedolido was reported to be buying a cigarette on a store located at the corner of Rizal and Quezon Avenues in Digos City at around 8:30 a.m. when a lone gunman approached him and pumped six bullets on his body.
The gunman then casually walked away and was fetched by a motorcycle driven by his alleged cohort.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), on the other hand, immediately condemned the killing of Bedolido whom it said was a reporter of weekly Kastigador in Digos City.
“It is clear that government’s failure or, and we suspect this is more accurate, refusal to hold accountable those responsible for the killings – especially the masterminds – makes it equally guilty, an accomplice to the bloodbath that has made a mockery of all our claims to being a democracy,” the NUJP statement entitled Without Accountability, The Killings Will Never Stop read.
“Ending the killings of journalists and resolving past cases will be a litmus test of how seriously Benigno Aquino III considers his promise of good governance,” it added.
The NUJP said that Bedolido is the 140th journalist killed since 1986 and the 104th under the Arroyo administration.
Bedolido’s murder followed that of Ilocos Norte’s Jovelito Agustin of dzJC Aksyon Radyo in Laoag City, who was ambushed on his way home Wednesday and died while being treated at a hospital, and Davao Oriental’s Desiderio Camangyan of Mati-based Sunshine FM, killed with a single shot to the head as he sat onstage while emceeing a singing contest in Manay town.
