Baba Sy (1935-1978) was a Senegalese draughts player and the first world champion from Africa. He is said to have been "discovered" by a French player.... is that true?

Yes, it's true. Monsieur Emile Biscons brought Baba Sy to France in 1959. Baba Sy immediately became champion of France, and qualified for the World championship 1960, in which he finished 2nd, behind Shchogolyev, but before defending champion Kuperman, both from the USSR.

In the video below, from 5:53 Ton Sijbrands is telling a bit about the manuscript Emile Biscons left us on Baba Sy, 'Les Secrets d'un Grand Maître International'.

This diagram appears on the video, and Sijbrands explains that he never quite understood how black managed to win this game. Below a short analysis with the help of Kingsrow.

41.40-35 29x40 42.35x44 25-30 43.47-42 30-35 44.48-43 23-29 45.42-37 24-30 46.50-45 30-34 47.37-31 21-26
Image

White makes a first and immediately fatal mistake here. After 48. 22-17! 26x37 49. 32x41 13-18 50. 41-37 4-9 51. 37-32 9-13 52. 43-39 34x43 53. 38x49 white would have secured a draw. In the game black blocks square <17>, reducing white's left wing to ruins.

48.44-39? 26x37 49.39x30 35x24 50.32x41 8-12! 51.41-37 24-30
Image

Here white could have put up a much stronger defense. Black can then only win with the help of some very non-obvious moves (53... 4-9! and 56.... 30-35!! in variant 2.2.2).
52. 43-39 29-34 53. 39-33 (53. 37-32? 34x43 54. 38x49 30-34!)
1) 53... 30-35? 54. 37-32! (with the threat 22-18 and 32-27=) 12-17 55. 22x11 16x7 56. 27-21 19-24 57. 28-23 13-19 58. 23x14 35-40 59. 33-28 40-44 60. 28-22 44-50 61. 14-10 50x26 62. 10-5 =.
2) 53... 4-9! 54. 37-32 12-18
2.1) 55. 27-21 (the most logical) 16x27 56. 22x31 19-24 (56... 30-35? 57. 33-29!! and 58. 31-27 =) and the threat 30-35-40-44-49 cannot be answered in time.
2.2) 55. 33-29 (still a losing move but with a nasty trick) 34x23 56. 22-17
2.2.1) 56... 30-34? (this seemingly strong move is a draw) 57. 28-22 34-39 58. 45-40 19-24 (58... 23-29? 59. 27-21! =) 59. 17-12!! (59. 27-21? B+) 18x7 60. 22-17 and even with 2 men behind white still obtains a draw.
2.2.2) 56... 30-35!! (delays getting a king but anticipates catching a future white king on 2) 57. 28-22 19-24 58. 17-12 18x7 59. 22-17 13-19 60. 17-11 9-14 61. 11x2 23-28 62 32x23 19x28 63. 2x30 35x24 B+

52.37-31? 29-34! 53.38-32 12-17 54.22x11 16x7 55.27-22 30-35 56.31-27 35-40 57.27-21 40-44 58.21-16 34-39 59.43x34 44-50 0-2

After a little research in the Volkskrant archives, it turns out that this game was also analyzed by Sijbrands in the Volkskrant of 14/02/1998. His analysis is essentially correct, but the estimated win in the variation 52. 43-39 29-34 53. 39-33 is for the wrong reasons. The suggested move 53... 30-35 is actually a database draw, but according to Kingsrow 53... 4-9 still saves the black win in that variation.
