Re: The Unofficial World Championship Of Computer Programs In International Draughts 2018

Hi Gérard, Instead of 44....7-12! black plays the losing move 44...11-16? Then white plays 45...37-32? instead of the winning move 45.37-31! Finally black answers with the losing move 45...16-21? instead of 45...7-12! = Scan improves 37-32 into 37-31 in a few seconds with a convincing score on my m...

Re: AlphaZero-style Breakthrough program

I guess most of us draughts programmers have barely transitioned from the Stone Age with hand-written and hand-tuned eval features, towards the Bronze Age with hand-written and machine-tuned eval features. The Iron Age of deep learning might take a while to be adopted :) Actually I meant a positive...

Re: AlphaZero-style Breakthrough program

... In any case, the message for anybody interested in the A0 approach is that it should work in all games, and apart from the hardest ones (Go, chess, Shogi) you don't need to be a millionaire to run the training part. Interesting. However, what sets draughts (& checkers) apart from the mentioned ...

Re: AlphaZero-style Breakthrough program

Hi all, Last month Richard Lorentz (http://www.csun.edu/~lorentz/), author of several game programs including one for Amazons, contacted me about the game of Breakthrough: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_(board_game) This game, that I will call BT here, was the inspiration behind my (h...

Re: Moby Dam

Play draughts in your webbrowser against a draughts engine I have created a simple user interface for 10x10 draughts that runs in the browser. You can play a game against yourself or against a draughts engine. Playing draughts in the browser has a number of advantages. The advantages of a user inte...

Re: Breakthrough draughts

Oops, how can you dare ask such question? Don’t you remember the guy who you treat as a liar and who decided then to stop participating to the draughts forums? It's not about Bert. I ask also for other programs. To my knowledge, with Bert Tuyt we are the ones who investigate the most on breakthroug...

Re: Electronic checker boards (over bluetooth)

Good news! The DGT team was very kind to share the protocol with me, and after a weekend of hacking I got it working for my DGT chess board (this one still has a RS232 cable so it required some cable creativity as well). So I am hopeful to do something similar for checkers soon too! http://aartbik....

Re: Breakthrough draughts

In the final position, both have one king, so it would depend on who got the first king. That means that we have to remenber who got the first king, who got the second king etc. In addition what happen when all or a part of the kings are captured during the game? It is of course feasable but IMO we...

Re: Breakthrough draughts

Small tweak to your proposal: win = opponent is out of moves (=current rules) ELSE (first to get 1 king AND opponent gets at most 1 king) ELSE (first to get 2 kings AND opponent gets at most 2 kings) ELSE ... This similar to the rules in eg high jump in athletics: highest distance wins, then least ...

Re: Breakthrough draughts

Hi, Do you know the "breakthrough" draughts variant (I do not know if this is the correct wording)? You take the standard rules of the international draughts game but you decide that the first side with a king wins the game. With this rule the game becomes extremely difficult because you can see th...

Re: Breakthrough draughts

There are many different versions possible. In my example, you would need to keep track of the order in which kings were obtained; you could do this with numbers but not necessarily elegant. Another alternative could be to say that the first to king that survives for at least two non-hitting moves ...

Re: Breakthrough draughts

In 2003 we already played an experimental tournament with this rule, but with one difference: after a breakthrough the game continues, and the player with the king only wins when he survives. To put it in other words: a regular game is played and only when there is no winner, the victory goes to th...
